Texas State Orchestra announced national semifinalists for the 2016 Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for the Performance of American Music

The ERNST BACON MEMORIAL AWARD for the Performance of American Music recognizes and rewards the best performances of American music by orchestras and choruses worldwide, based on submitted recordings. The American Prize is a series of new, non-profit national competitions in the performing arts providing cash awards, professional adjudication and regional, national and international recognition for the best recorded performances by ensembles and individuals each year in the United States at the professional, college/university, church, community and secondary school levels. Administered by Hat City Music Theater, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Danbury, Connecticut, The American Prize was founded in 2009 and is awarded annually.

Mollicone-Harnick One-Act Opera Salutes Lady Bird

Lady Bird: First Lady of the Land, a one-act opera by composer Henry Mollicone and librettist Sheldon Harnick, received its premiered in the new Patti Strickel Harrison Theatre of Texas State University (LBJ’s alma mater, then called Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College) April 28-May 1... The responsive, nicely balanced 29-piece Texas State Symphony Orchestra was led by Australian Carolyn Watson, who became the ensemble’s director last fall.

‘Lady Bird’ to debut at Texas State University

After months of preparation, ‘Lady Bird: First Lady of the Land’ is set to debut Thursday, April 28 at Texas State University.  Henry Mollicone and Pulitzer Prize winning librettist Sheldon Harnick were commissioned to author and compose the opera, which will run at the Patti Strickel Harrison Theater April 28 through May 1.

Texas State Symphony Orchestra to feature in world premier opera production of Lady Bird

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has awarded Texas State Director of Opera Studies Sam Mungo a grant to co-comission an opera. The world premiere of Lady Bird, a work on the life and accomplishments of Lady Bird Johnson, will be staged in April 2016. The opera is co-commissioned by the Texas State Opera Theatre, via Texas State University and Texas Hill Country Opera & Arts Festival.
